King Stannis Baratheon

King Stannis Baratheon was the second son of Steffon and Cassana Baratheon. Stannis was a claimant and one of the primary contenders for the Iron Throne during the War of the Five Kings. He is the father of Shireen Baratheon, who was named Lady Paramount of the Stormlands after Queen Daenerys' conquest.

History

War of the Five Kings

Stannis Baratheon was a claimant to the Iron Throne during the War of the Five Kings. He took control of his brother Renly's forces after his murder under suspicious circumstances. Stannis besieged King's Landing at the battle of the Blackwater, but was defeated by the city's garrison, led by Tyrion Lannister and a combined force of Westermen and Reachmen, led by Tywin Lannister.

After his defeat, Stannis set sail for the North and engaged Mance Rayder at the Battle of Castle Black, crushing the Wildling forces. Stannis then looked to gain the North's support by uplifting a member of House Stark to paramountcy. Stannis initially looked to Jon Snow, the bastard son of Eddard Stark, but was unable to convince the boy to abandon his vows to The Night's Watch.

Stannis attempted to rally other Northern Lords to his side, and sent his hand, Davos Seaworth, to treat with Lord Wyman Manderly. News reached Stannis that ser Davos was executed by Lord Manderly. In truth, he was sent to Skagos in an attempt to find Rickon Stark, having died in the process.

Eventually, the Stag's army clashed with the Flayed Man's. After a few initial skirmishes, Stannis Baratheon was defeated and slain by Roose Bolton's forces at the Siege of Winterfell. Upon his death, his forces were pushed out of the North, and his daughter captured and offered as a token of fealty from the Boltons to the new Targaryen queen.
